Of you don't pay people you ensure only those with means can work for a campaign. How is that more noble and progressive than paying a fair wage for work?
This same logic applies to large open source projects and many nonprofits. Eg lots of free software has paid coders at core. Always a balancing act, but done well $ paid to architects/organizers/managers/leaders can multiply its effects. Key's to not let $ capture the project.
