People who support UBI could learn a thing or two from coal politics. Work is also about identity, community, and purpose, not just survival

Much prefer this to “you’re worthless and I do want you to starve” tbh.
-
who wouldn’t. But that’s not the case in any first world country

best take on ubi i've seen is to think of it as a dividend, not a dole cheque. ubi gives you the leverage to only do jobs that are worth it.

no one ever worries about the "idle rich" feeling worthless!

Dude no. UBI is a cushion that allows for hard times, entrepreneurship, and it discourages exploitative employment practices.

Some folks do treat it as a replacement for work for the day “when” AI/automation make work obsolete. You’re right that take is shitty. But don’t throw the UBI baby out with the bath water.

Seems like we should re-examine why we determine our self-worth based on our job title. Or are you saying everyone who is retired is worthless?

I like & support the "we don't want you to starve" half of that equation. UBI doesn't fix the former but the latter matters. And the "rents" argument I think you're making against UBI, I like
@MattBruenig's take: http://mattbruenig.com/2017/11/15/weird-ubi-argument-about-rents/ … -
UBI doesn't fix housing, healthcare or education; nor does it "solve" the problems arising from automation, tech & trade displacements around work; but we can afford to ensure people don't starve and we should.

You seem to assume that worth, identity etc can only be had by (paid) work. Bollocks to that. I would like to see what people would choose to do if they weren’t afraid of starving.
