Pilots on delayed flights always promise to ‘make up some time in the air’. What, your original flight plan was to fly some lazy eights?

My understanding is that flight times are actually optimized for cost (fuel consumption), not time. So pilots usually have some room to make up time if needed.

Am flight student (private pilot, so nowhere close to airline.) Can confirm that there's a tradeoff between speed and fuel consumption.
