A thermodynamics question hoisted from my mentions: what’s more fossil fuel efficient, a Tesla run on coal-generated power or a Honda Civic?

there are studies about this.

I should hope so!

If that's even close to the case, Civic wins on carbon emissions since oil is a hydrocarbon while coal is just carbon.

gotta also count whatever fuel was burned mining/refining all that lithium

I realize it gets very hairy once you start looking at the supply chain

The full-supply-chain comparisons I've read have the tesla on top because of gasoline refinement/transpo costs. Roughly equiv. to Prius.

So what? The goal is zero fossil fuels; we are curr cleaning the elec supply and we need to replace all existing cars with elec

perhaps the most important point is that a civic can't get more efficient over time.
