Whatever else you do, don’t put your phone number on your Gmail account (even as a ‘recovery number’). Use an app or security key for 2FA

I haven't found a way to prevent using SMS 2FA. it always shows up as an alt option... I use Authy/YubiKey but the SMS makes it insecure

if you have a recovery app and turn on the security codes (the ones you print on paper), it should let you remove SMS

Re-added my authenticator, was able to get rid of sms... but still shows when signing in. Guess I'll wait. Thanks for the helppic.twitter.com/yhlbZEpsZj

that’s really weird. Can you go back to your 2FA settings and verify you removed the phone? Last step should be red REMOVE button

Yep, that's what I did. Guessing that it stays there for ~1wk in case an attacker got in and removed the number.

in my experience it’s removed immediately. This is either new behavior, or there’s something different about your account. Odd.

sorry to bug you but it’s important for me to understand this. After checking recovery number, can you send screenshot of login?
