Whatever else you do, don’t put your phone number on your Gmail account (even as a ‘recovery number’). Use an app or security key for 2FA

the reason for that is it’s far too easy to hijack phone numbers. Don’t trust Verizon to protect your personal email account

definitely. But the basic problem is that thousands of people legitimately lose their phones every day, and need # reassigned

that’s why the social engineering works so well. Call in tears, parent just died, lost phone, need phone number reassigned ASAP
