Whatever else you do, don’t put your phone number on your Gmail account (even as a ‘recovery number’). Use an app or security key for 2FA

the reason for that is it’s far too easy to hijack phone numbers. Don’t trust Verizon to protect your personal email account

much better than SMS, not as good as security key. Only difference from authenticator app is that it requires talking to server
