The crazy today is because it's in the process of becoming a primarily compiled language, free from browser politics and irregularity.

But the tools haven't standardized for this transition yet, so there are way too many options - a clear 'best' way has yet to emerge.

It's all so crazy because these changes are happening while the language is in use everywhere, rather than in a private beta somewhere.

IMO it's a good thing, this is the apotheosis of JavaScript, but it's messy af and gonna get worse before it settles down.

I suspect we'll see way more work done at the AST level and new languages and paradigms will emerge targeting the compiler/tools.

It's easy to take pot shots at JavaScript, but IMO this is a painful transition period and we'll end up with powerful tools. /end

I’m not taking pot shots at javascript; I’m taking pot shots at javascript developers

To what end, though? We're doing our best. Real problem is an industry driven by bullsht incentives prioritizing increasingly flashy drivel.

speaking seriously, I think web developers need to abandon trying to make things look like native apps. It’s bad for everyone

That's not the developers though, that's the designers. Most web devs have zero say in the look/feel they're implementing.

that’s a good point. But designers are feeling these pressures themselves. We need to figure out how to counterbalance them
