I would argue that updating software is more equivalent to tool maintenance; if you don’t lubricate farm equipment you’re fucked too.

I think software compares well to "working" but slowly crumbling civil infrastructure - but with month timescales instead of decades.

Lead goosenecks, pipes, rawhide mains fittings, jammed safety valves are all "working" water systems "without funds for upgrades" bc boring.
