The lesson is, flee to the country that has the cushiest etymology for ‘refugee’. Suggestions welcome!https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/834279524078530561 …

The Russian word for refugee is “someone who runs”, while in Polish it’s “someone who walks away”. English assumes they find a place to stay

in Te Reo Maori, "rerenga" can be used for "refugee" and "distant family member" (see http://maoridictionary.co.nz/search?idiom=&phrase=&proverb=&loan=&histLoanWords=&keywords=rerenga …)

at the risk of ruining the joke, always assumed it was somehow short for 避難民.

Both in Finnish, too. First one a technical term, "correct", in legislation. Second just someone who is on the escape.

Turvapaikanhakija = person seeking for refuge. Pakolainen = someone on an escape.

In Dutch: 'vluchteling', someone fleeing, running away. But we also have 'asielzoeker', asylum seeker. One can become the other

To add on this: "iltica", "mülteci", "melce", etc. are derived from the same Arabic root that means "to take shelter".

"ilticacı" is a makeshift word that may carry a slight "faking it" meaning. It's relatively recent and not as common.
