my understanding is all icloud stuff is encrypted by the phone before storage

I thought iCloud backups were encrypted with a key that Apple could use to decrypt, and they do comply with court orders

Everything listed there is *synced* data, and presumably the iOS backups provided would be in an encrypted state?

yeah, my understanding too is that non-keychain iCloud is not meaningfully encrypted. Makes iCloud backup e2e breaking.

ever since 9.3ish, they've started encrypting it against the iPhone passcode. That's why you'll be asked for it upon restore
