In the books, a collision of a laser and a personal shield causes a fusion reaction that kills everyone for miles around. That's why they use swords rather than lasers. In the desert they can't use shields because it attracts the worms. Makes perfect sense, of course.

There is a lot of world building that is straight up missing. In the book if an energy weapon touches a shield there is a cataclysmic explosion that would wipe out the whole area.
The first half was maybe ok, CGI pretty, then it just fades into the lack of explanations and the annoyingly bombastic music. Overwrought and misses a lot of the interesting character development of the books

Guild soldiers/comamandos typically wear body-shaped force shields. when a lasgun beam hits a shield it makes a huge explosion, which can kill the shooter. thus, they dont use lasguns against people. all explained in book. only slow physical things pierce shields, thus blades
