I know many of you who follow me helped support Jared Golden in 2018 and 2020. I think his statement on the Build Back Better package is worth reading, whether you agree with him or not, as the perspective of a Democrat who wins in a rural Trump district. https://repgolden.medium.com/my-thoughts-on-how-to-improve-the-build-back-better-proposal-7ddd173c327a …pic.twitter.com/qWujIIzE2W

I think the hardest thing for fellow Democrats to accept here may be the idea that they're wealthy in the eyes of CD2 Mainers, even as they struggle with the high cost of city living in states like New Jersey or Massachusetts. That's a deep cultural divide in the Democratic party

I learned from Golden's statement that two core beliefs of Twitter Democratic discourse—that spending levels can be unlimited and means testing is evil—don't hold up well in the kinds of districts we need to learn to carry.

This is why I think Golden is worth listening to carefully. He outperformed Biden by 7 points and the Senate candidate in his state (who spent $63M) by 18 points. You may not like it, but this is what peak Democratic performance looks like.pic.twitter.com/XWPe7Q2jBS

There's been an interesting corruption of the meaning of 'universalism' in social policy of late - it used to be used for policies that would largely benefit working/lower middle class people and which the upper middle classes would gain a marginal benefit which was acceptable...

...as a) the overall effect would still be strongly redistributive and b) stigma issues might otherwise discourage the intended targets, but now tends to be used to justify policies that primarily benefit upper middle class people with everyone else gaining only marginally.

Meanstesting is objectively bad though. Golden is a bit of a weird guy anyways. He supports Medicare For All but then says stuff like that. He's uniquely a Maine politician. Not sure if it says anything else beyond that.

My argument is that means testing, whether it's good or bad, is a political necessity if we want to keep the House. Whether Golden is sui generis or someone worth emulating is something we'll just have to disagree on.
