Nuclear twitter: what's the big procedural obstacle in 2021 to building lots and lots of nuclear power plants? Is it something you need Congress to fix or could executive action do it alone?

IDK. Oak Harbor OH thrived for 50 years on Nuclear. I'm sure that they would welcome the re-opening of Davis-Besse.

a less loaded question would be something like "What needs to happen to get the Vogtle reactor expansion working after 14 years?"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vogtle_Electric_Generating_Plant#Units_3_and_4 …

another more fruitful question would be "How come the Bellefonte expansion couldn't get off the ground after 47 years?" or maybe "Why did Watts Bar take four decades?"https://www.yahoo.com/now/end-era-tva-gives-construction-080000912.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=tw&tsrc=twtr …

Depends on what you mean procedural, but keeping track of the waste is a problem. Where do we put it, how do we make sure it's secure, who's gonna pay for it.

Also it's still not as cost effective as coal or especially natural gas

The inability of Japan Steel to make steel without unacceptable levels of carbon impurities, which is therefore insufficiently tough, has been a biggie in Europe. There’s few forges big enough to make pressure vessels, and those that are big enough seem unable to do the job.

        1) NRC permitting. The NRC basically _doesn't_, with the two Vogtle reactor expansions being the first time since the AEC was turned into the NRC that they ever issued one. As a process, every reactor is treated as a one-off, and design decisions are incredibly conservative.

It's not clear that the NRC could issue twenty permits in a year even if they wanted to, using their current procedures and personnel. And they don't really want to.

Sorry, I just just practical obstacles. 1. Battery + PV/wind are cheap-ish and easy to commission/permit. 2. Where you gonna get all the enriched uranium? (unless you wanna fly a CANDU design by the NRC) 3. Where you gonna get the nuke engineers, HP techs and jumpers?
