Our political leaders created a huge buildup to bills that were supposed to make the New Deal look like chump change, went all-in on debt ceiling drama, and then just said "meh" about it all. That seems like a bigger political emergency than the specific content of these policies
Part of political leadership is just storytelling and getting people to participate in a shared narrative around national priorities. So for example, what's the story on Covid right now, going into winter? What is even the content of Build Back Better at this point? No one says.
The Democratic critique of Trumpism for four years was that it was destroying democracy, so the failure to wield power once given it is extremely damaging. You can't say the house is on fire and then argue for a year over which hose to use without people feeling taken for a ride.
And that's apparently the extent of Democrats' message going into 2022. "The house is still on fire! Better elect us again!"https://twitter.com/davidaxelrod/status/1447674966422458370 …
“Doing nothing” is when you have drafted two bills massively expanding the social safety net but can’t pass either of them because of the intransigence of 2 people, who are against the most popular things in those bills Yes, this is an entire party “doing nothing”
It is in fact doing nothing. Everyone's got a sob story.
The defense is that we should name names. And for the most part the problem is not Democrats in general but specifically Manchin and Sinema.
Voters didn't elect Democrats to whine.
The thing about "do nothing" is it's always better than "do reactionary stuff". I mean, there's a case that do nothing is sometimes a pretty good outcome.
It's a hard political sell to make, though. "We did nothing, but you should have seen what the other guys wanted to do."
