I think a lot about the song that was popular at one point in interwar Japan. “There is a law of nations, it is true/but in the end, the strong eat up the weak.” That attitude is really prevalent in China.https://twitter.com/DSORennie/status/1441719785109143552 …

NB the law is treated here as no more than a lever by which power is exercised. Xinhua’s moral: that a jealous America used “law” to try to contain China but was outmatched by Chinese power. The implications of such a bleak worldview for the coming international order are serious https://twitter.com/XHNews/status/1441680427744325641 …

It’s one reason I disliked Three-Body Problem: much of it felt like it was pushing the kind of relentless personal and political cynicism that pervades the PRC.

the three body problem is a perfect microcosm of current Party politics and i wish it wasn't so greedily ingested by eager nerds.

Is it worth a read as a sci book itself, or more for how it reflects that worldview? It's been on my list forever but I never got around to it

yeah the other reason I don't like it is because it's badly written, if well translated.

It reminded me of 60s american scifi novels that would be considered a "classic" for being the first to have artificial gravity or something, but weren't very good by modern standards. If it was written in English and set in the US noone would have cared
