The culture around NFTs and other cryptowoo is genuinely vibrant and interesting. People have an enthusiasm and fearlessness about trying stuff that reminds the dinosaurs still among us of the early web days. This is especially true for young people just arriving on the scene.

… it still feels very much like a fad, and nothing about the actual art (except to the extent the whole thing is conceptual art) actually requires the NFT to make it work. It also seems to amplify all the worst ways in which art is being eaten by the “art market”.

Having there be a meaningful concept of an “original” executed in a digital medium has huge potential value to some artists. But I don’t see how NFTs actually achieve that, or how blockchain has much to contribute here.

I don't either. The potential for easy money seems to be combining with the fun of tinkering in the most toxic ways. I just wish we had an alternative for these enthusiasts that wasn't so airless and dead.
