I've been in mostly violent agreement with @smdiehl and others who call out cryptocurrency and its descendants for what they are—an end run around financial regulation at best, a massive fraud at worst. We all agree it makes no sense as a technology. But one thing worries me:https://twitter.com/smdiehl/status/1445795667826208770 …

And part of it is definitely that everyone today carries an incredible computer in their pocket and... you can't do anything with it. My first computer program at age 8 made an IBM desktop write profanity in an infinite loop. I wouldn't begin to know how to do that on an iPhone.

I think you might be missing all the art stations, deviant arts and others. Or even Minecraft or Roblox creator communities. Difference - instead of putting their content (for free...) and letting platform owners earn money, they are like "f u" and want to monetize it themselves.
-
I'm definitely out of the loop on most things today.

FWIW, I don't think the web-qua-web is the problem. There's more hoops, but you can still stand up an HTTPS website and anyone with a device can interact with it. The real culprits are Apple and Google and their walled-garden approach to software.

It seems some number with this personality now go into content creation and using the platforms, no?

The web wasn't created for what we did with it. Talented young people will find outlets in the margins that aren't being watched yet - just like every generation before.

Hear you, I've been through exactly the same line of thinking as you have. The only hope I have is that software markedly improves on the other side of either big tech antitrust action or a crypto market crash. And the latter seems far more expedient to accomplish.
-
I've been an advocate of the antitrust stuff on the merits, but in all honesty can't imagine what transformative effect it would have. We split Instagram and WhatsApp off, and make Google divest Chrome and Android, and then what happens?
