The weirdest idea floating around today is that an independent WhatsApp would not be capable of having its own outages.https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1445135761997799430 …

Sure, but if whatsapp were independent it would likely not have an outage at the *same time* as Facebook

Replying to @noamsml
But it might have other outages that the marriage to Facebook averted

I think this is missing the point, namely that three major communication systems failed at the same time. This is different from the question of individual system reliability. That's how AOC's comment should be understood.

That’s also what I took to be the point - outages in consolidated monopoly systems are bad. Nobody is arguing an independent WhatsApp would never go down

Also, & I ask not knowing if this is common, but re: key cards not working, server rooms locked, etc...how crazy was it to have all their integrated operations software w/in the combined applications' single point of failure?

I would wait for more details to emerge before asserting things like that.

It's been reported w/ confirmation https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/04/technology/facebook-down.html …pic.twitter.com/7NVdlJGFDG

That doesn't say the thing that you said. We don't know if it's a single shared point of failure, or if it's cascading failures from something else.
