For those of us who are not progressive, a lot of it is like watching a repeat of education polarization and ideological sorting that happened on a national scale repeat itself within the Democratic Party. In this dynamic, purity of purpose is rewarded and equated with strength.

There's a feedback loop between legislative paralysis and ideological polarization that makes everything worse. When it is impossible for any legislator to be effective in their job (because the institution is paralyzed), there's no disincentive to electing charismatic extremists

Put another way, when the machinery of lawmaking locks up, there's no reason to elect people skilled at operating it, no incentive for legislators to fold on one thing so they can get their way on another, and no way to credibly promise voters change apart from radical reform

An honest definition of "moderate Democrat" would be based on how popular their policies are among all Democrats. By that definition, the "moderates" in your tweet aren't really moderates. They're fringe, which is why they're increasingly easy to beat.
-
That's a definition that begs the question of polarization. In earlier eras, "moderate" was defined against the electorate as a whole, but now there are two disjoint electorates inhabiting their own worlds.

It seems that Washington is currently in total gridlock because there are two Democratic parties who refuse to compromise with each other. It's a very weird dynamic.

They're not 'vetoing moderate legislation', they're holding centrists to the terms of their deal: infra bill and budget bill were always inextricably linked. It's not progressives' fault the centrists are trying to wiggle out of it.
