I guess I disagree with you about the christian democracy outcome being some kind of existential threat. It seems pretty consonant with American traditions and perfectly livable provided it comes with revitalized democratic and civic institutions

it is existential for the contemporary Democratic Party, though. the combination of social liberalism and de facto “meritocratic” stratification that it represents without a social democratic wing becomes an empty husk. everyone hates dissolute mandarins. /fin
