a three-year bill could include all the preparatory work for vision/dental medicare expansion, so that a successor bill could just provide the funds and flip a switch in October 2024.https://twitter.com/mucha_carlos/status/1443634700153761797 …

Spending $1.5 trillion over 3 years is like $5 trillion over 10 years. Stop the new spending cold turkey a month before the 2024 presidential election and even the DeSantis-Cotton ticket will support a funding extension. #justsaying https://twitter.com/mucha_carlos/status/1441006047888543744 …

Our chance of controlling Congress at that point is maybe like 25%?

“we” are not the only party subject to popular pressure is pretty precisely @mucha_carlos’ point.

The fundamental problem with this plan is that Manchin and the House moderates 1) agree with @mucha_carlos's theory of political economy and 2) are ideologically opposed to much higher levels of federal spending, not just afraid of large numbers for political reasons.pic.twitter.com/KeciAUikjb

yes. i agree that the big risk with this plan is not its internal political economy, but that sinemanchin understand the political economy and block a package with an effective cliff precisely for that reason. 1/

but if we loudly offer a $1.5T headline bill with the most materially beneficial provisions three-years funded and frame it as capitulation, we can put them in a position where they have to be very clear about that. 2/

ultimately this is not a misunderstanding, some kind of question that can be fudged. we want a state in which the public expects and relies upon Federally arranged social insurance. the people they tacitly represent want to avoid that at all costs. 3/

there’s the battle and the war, time goes on past this reconciliation bill. but this really is a zero-sum kind of struggle, at least narrowly. one side will win, one side will lose, and the stakes are pretty existential. 4/

Curious what you think the existential stakes are. I assume you don't use that word lightly.

i think there are broadly four potential long-term outcomes: social democracy, christian democracy, authoritarian consolidation of stratification, or breakdown (fragmentation of the polity, civil war). 1/

this current war is over whether social democracy has any chance in the US. that’s a prospect the democratic party’s has a monopoly on. even the best of the republicans are manchinesque, they won’t go there. 2/
