I see people dunking on Manchin today but he's being utterly reasonable here. If the progressive agenda is so incredibly popular, why don't more people get elected on it? A pretty reasonable position to take if you're a Democratic senator who wins re-election in an R+23 statepic.twitter.com/kZDL6x3VKj

You can talk about the system being unfair all you want, but it's not going to impress the guy who overcomes a 23 point handicap in one of America's redder states. At some point you have to concede that policy you can't get elected on is maybe not so genuinely popular.

If the senate were in any way representative of population or popularity, you might have a point. But my senators represent 38 million more people than Manchin does.

I wish the rules were different, too. But you have to work with what you're given.

Very different statement than claiming extremely popular policy isn't "genuinely popular" as evidenced by Manchin's success in a twisted system.

My point is different than this. I'm saying if you have an extremely popular policy, you should be able to convert that into victories. If you can't, then either the policy isn't popular, or you have a big political failure.

You *should* be able to pass overwhelmingly popular policy, yes. Especially after sweeping GA and AZ. Manchin's "skill" here is simple inertia to keep things structurally broken in his favor/profit.

it's almost like the natl Democrat party is inept and natl Republican party is very, very good at politics. A lot of Republican policies that get implemented aren't all that popular
