Also, does he actually think we have an open borders policy? Do people really think anyone who steps on US Soil gets granted a green card? Is he aware of the HUGE green card backlogs and how not everyone is eligible??

You can think of "nation" as an ethnicity with an army. A nation-state is a country where citizenship is pretty much identified with belonging to one such homogeneous group, like Japan or modern Poland or Hungary.
