In SF I lived upstairs from a really terrible cafe. The coffee was awful, but on weekends the Indonesian owner would slow-cook food there for her family, and over time I begged her to the point where she let me buy Sunday lunch, if she thought I could handle the spice. So good!

That sounds exactly like my experience! And the nice lady explained to me that every group of villages has its own cuisine, so you have to spend a lifetime eating to get your bearings. Which I am prepared to do.
