Or Facebook exaggerates the effectiveness of their advertising, which we know they lie about. I grew up surrounded by young-Earth creationists and people who thought Jesus was coming back any day now. They've always been here, you just didn't see them before.

Quorum sensing. Like the bacteria on your teeth. When they see enough of a crowd, they make plaque. In short, basic to all life. Social media amplifies quorum sensing, so subcultures think they have reached a power position, and act like it.
