the idea that Chinese military modernization puts it *ahead* of the US seems weirdly common and extremely mistaken except in a couple of narrow but important fields

the Chinese military budget is still (even going by unofficial figures) not only far behind the US but still attempting to make up enormous gaps. There's potential leapfrog advantages but there's also enormous problems.

I also reiterate the constant problem; we are *aware* of the US military's faults and failings, we are far less aware of China's - because Chinese reporters can't report on them even a little bit, and the insights we get are mostly through politicized anti-corruption campaigns
