It took real, diligent, scholarly work to push back on the Waffen-SS fan site enthusiasts built on Wikipedia, wired right to the tops of Google search engine results.

Left on the site, pages corresponding to otherwise non-notable recipients of a widely-awarded Nazi medal gradually accrued apologist (and adulatory) content sourced from SS fan-sites. Since the subjects are obscure, the misinformation stays up for years.

Because of the privileged place WP gets on Google, there’s big incentive to make bogus promotional pages for random subjects. But almost no incentive system to tediously police all those pages for accuracy. Notability (the “GNG”) is the first line of defense.
