In would gladly sacrifice bitcoin, Finland, and http://pinboard.com to help mitigate climate disaster.

I'd be delighted to sacrifice pinboard-dot-com, a domain that confuses my customers to no end.

The US uses 337 million gallons of gas per day, 33.7 kWh per gallon => ~11e9 kWh => 11 terrawatt hours. So Bitcoin uses about as much power in a year as the US uses to drive for a day.

I left out a burn inefficiency factor of ten because I'm bad at compacting tweets. But it certainly looks like plastic straw diversionary tactics. The relatively high energy use is still useful for dismissing the notion that bitcoin could be used as a currency.
