It's not so much finding an ulterior motive as pointing out that when counterintuitive Slatepitch BS is the coin of the realm, they guy's far more incentivized to prove what a clever boy he is than actually demonstrate either concern for other lives or concern for detail.

The reward for counterintuitive takes of that sort is feeling like you're smarter than everyone, and then feeling extremely satisfied when your argument persuades other people. Lining it all up with money incentives is cake, but the core mechanism (speaking personally) is that.
