I can't get my mind around why people are conflating two orthogonal issues—whether withdrawing from Afghanistan was the right thing to do, and why there was a total failure to plan for the safe and orderly departure of people it was our *policy* under four administrations to save

Nailed it right here. Electoral College and Senate Map. Too many swing state voters have turned to embracing nativism over the last two decades so letting in the refugees, even though will be good for America in the long term, not politically tenable for a D potus short term.

Oh, please. How many heavily Dem states would have a majority voting for 100k Muslim refugees? How about 1 million? Immigration or free speech may get support from the “elites”, but general public shows bipartisan disdain for either until they or their social circle needs it.

It's not bigotry from moderates it's apathy - a recurring problem. And we all know which party's voters would have a bigger fit assimilating 100k Muslims.
