I can't get my mind around why people are conflating two orthogonal issues—whether withdrawing from Afghanistan was the right thing to do, and why there was a total failure to plan for the safe and orderly departure of people it was our *policy* under four administrations to save

What you're left with is either rank incompetence or a dark political calculation about keeping the number of Afghans in the US to a minimum. Combined with the continuation of Trump's policies on the southern border, it is getting hard to give Biden the benefit of the doubt here

It comes down to a bipartisan belief that our pluralistic society of 350 million can't absorb a hundred thousand Muslim immigrants, most of whom (given the nature of the selection process) are highly skilled and speak English. This bigotry is a rare issue unifying all Americans

I'm sure it could have been done better but I think there's also a catch-22 where if you evacuate everyone who helped us prior to us leaving who is stabilizing the security situation during that withdrawal?
