Comparing Afghanistan and Vietnam is easy to do, but I think misses more than it captures. Among other things, the Vietnam war dominated the news almost every night; people had strong opinions about it (and the draft). Afghanistan was mostly an exercise in domestic indifference.

The lack of a draft obviously made a huge difference in domestic interest, but I think there were other significant differences, too. Vietnam was a proxy war in ways Afghanistan never was, for example.

Try to name a popular protest song about the Afghanistan war.
