The right thing for Biden to do now is essentially ransom out the thousands of people he didn't bother to evacuate from Afghanistan when the US had all the time in the world. I have no faith in his doing the right thing, but since it's also the pragmatic thing, there's a chance.

It's 1975 military cosplay, except with none of the pressure American forces faced during the fall of Saigon. They had total control. Biden and his generals went at this with all the care and forethought of a freshman writing his first term paper.https://twitter.com/IntelCrab/status/1426948508289011712 …

If we don't get a hundred generals' heads on pikes, lining the Potomac in clear view of the Pentagon, this will just happen again and again.

(I say this with the full understanding that the DoD pays upwards of $100,000 per pike)

We talk about the existence of the Blob, a kind of derp state that survives across administrations and is committed to a US imperial project. Those people also need to feel the flames against their feet. We need accountability for Iraq and Afghanistan https://twitter.com/TTuna402/status/1426958091178979333 …

That accountability at State and Defense can even come on their own terms. We can take as given that the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq were a terrific idea and still clean house for how incompetently the plans were executed, how much money was wasted, and how much they lied

Biden had already been in the Senate for two years when Saigon fell, so he doesn't even have everyone else's excuse that this is his first rodeo. Clearly he must have liked what he saw. "That will be me one day," the young Senator whispered, looking at TV footage of Gerald Ford.

This is the idea everyone outside of government had months ago. Biden doesn't want Afghans in the US, but is under pressure to evacuate them from members of Congress who served there, so this is the solution. Let them all come in once they can't get out.https://twitter.com/hugolowell/status/1426946512853118977 …
