Mellon just wants to 'help.' Giving a million here and there to make the Humanities look fundable, but enrollments are tanking. No new jobs, really dumb initiatives and like so many non-profits, it does more damage than good. They are the biggest donor in town

The Endowment has blown up after 2008 crisis. They can't spend that $$ fast enough and like British Empire, they create the good colonized, to be separated from the bad colonized. Those who refuse Medical Humanities for instance.

This was a genuine crisis in my time there. There's some statutory minimum on how much of its endowment a foundation must spend each year, and Mellon was making so much from investments that they were in panic mode over how to spend enough of the money.

Mellon also had a bunch of tortoises in their Manhattan courtyard, one of them named after a director's Latino interior decorator. We all had to sit primly along the wall during board meetings. I took long, secret naps in the lactation room and quit before they could fire me.
