So many needlessly tribal fights. Voting: security vs. accessibility. Covid+kids: learning vs. safety. CSAM: privacy vs. protecting kids. We all need to commit to engaging with open minds. We have more common goals than stark differences.

Tough when you spend two years thinking and writing about an issue, engaging in workshops with people like
@alexstamos. And then you’re handed the decision by a faceless multinational company operating a PR operation.4 replies 3 retweets 95 likes -
I haven’t seen an alternative proposal that Apple dismissed in the last couple of days. Could you share the alternative option that would have kept both sides happy?

There is none: There is a principle involving client side scanning that, no matter how you implement it, will be objected to.

Where would you draw the line on client side scanning, Nick? All files on device? Only files shared with other users (to prevent CSAM distribution?) Cleartext backups? Encrypted backups? I asked you this earlier and you gave me no answer.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts about the governance of the CSEM database, and whether it should be global or run by national authorities. The current set up (with NCMEC) kind of relies on most large sites being US-hosted, but that goes away with client-side detection.
