You're a really smart person and I know you understand the significance of doing this on the device vs. server side. The status quo is a tradeoff (because horrifying amounts of CSEM *do* get uploaded to any image sharing site), and Apple's move is a big shift in that tradeoff
Maybe I'm misremembering who I had it with. The issue is not whether on-device face recognition is safer than some other approach, but that a world where devices scan your face during use is a much worse world to live in than one where they don't.
