The broader context of this is a years-long push by the DOJ that they simply must have backdoor access to devices or society will collapse, and by the FBI that encrypted group messaging poses a huge threat to children, a lot of which is argued in good faith.

That’s a reasonable point, and this could be a reasonable solution which doesn’t provide any access for the FBI etc yet does solve this problem.

I’d only say: is it just possible that during the development period (I’m guessing months running into years) someone - maybe more than one person? - inside Apple said “how might this be used maliciously by people or governments?” They’re not Pollyannas.
