Hungarians being anti-immigrant is a great historical joke, since they themselves arrived from God knows where in Siberia and spent a good century inflicting misery across Europe before they got their wiggles out and bunkered down in the most defensible terrain they could find.pic.twitter.com/2oq9WgHmfR

This is the kind of place you choose to live when you're nomadic horsemen who came out of the east to sack the shit out of Europe and don't want the playbook flipped on you by the next horde. They even hired Germans to build cities in the high passes, for early warning!pic.twitter.com/PiSGn9g511

The other historical joke is that no one benefitted more from multiculturalism, tolerance, and ethnic pluralism than the Magyars, who punched way above their weight in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

I still think Polish nationalism is the dumbest in Europe, since our only historical achievement was to invent a half-assed form of democracy that destroyed the country, and our great national poem begins with the words "Lithuania, my homeland!". But Hungary is a strong runner-up

In fairness to the Hungarians, kudos to anyone who arrives in Eastern Europe, sees Slavic grammar and orthography, and then says "hold my Egri Bikavér"

That the Hungarian words for things like "clean" and "table" are Slavic loan words tells you something about the worldview and culture of these very stabby early immigrants to Europe. They should be nicer to today's refugees.

They're just like the gentrifiers who moved in 5 years ago to the next round of gentrifiers.

My dad was born in a German village in Hungary. Our ancestors were part of a sizeable immigration of Swabian Germans into Hungary in the 18th Century.

If you ever get a chance to see the German cities in Hungary and Transylvania, they are some of the most scenic in Europe

one might say they know the dangers because their ancestors were the dangers! (I kid, but they're doing terrible shit)
