1. fwiw, i was on the ground in the Sichuan ‘灾区’ within a week of the 2008 quake and the dynamics were very different. The dynamic there was growing local outrage over a ham-fisted cover-up of deaths. Getting very different vibes with this.https://twitter.com/kevincarrico/status/1419242534258102279 …

@pinboard is guessing ‘tens of thousands’ of deaths just based on the footage that came out and the urban density of effected areas. My gut instinct is that the coverup here is both the locals and CCP are embarassed by the damage and videos, not the body count.3 replies 0 retweets 9 likesShow this thread -
Replying to @Comparativist @Pinboard
I think he’s in over his skis here, but Pinboard is basing his claim on footage of completely flooded road tunnels and suggestions that bumper to bumper traffic was stuck there, not so much density. Though that might not give >10k, since a lane-km is likely less than 200 people.

I'll pull back over my skis and just say the footage was horrifying and I hope the true death toll ends up much closer to the current official figures than to my guesstimate.
