The Chinese government's immediate decision to cover up the tragedy is evil, but western reporting is also not blameless. There's more to life in China than Xi, Xinjiang and whatever Chinese diplomats are up to on Twitter, but we hear about essentially none of it.

There’s a weird feeling seeing Zhengzhou trending and thinking this is what it’s gonna be known for in the West for a while, like if nobody knows anything about Houston outside the context of Hurricane Harvey
