Additional bear advice: when in grizzly country, tie bells to your backpack so bears can hear you coming, and carry a bottle of pepper spray. Look out for bear dung on the trail. How do you know if it's bear dung? See if it has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

I felt like I was prepped until I read that black bears can be brown, so you need to look at the front shoulder blades to be sure. And the odds of that happening in the moment... So it mostly comes down to knowing what's in the area already.
