This is my favorite genre of article in the world. Why don't professors do more to warn the most highly educated, intelligent young people in the country not to go hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt? How else could they possibly figure it out?https://www.wsj.com/articles/financially-hobbled-for-life-the-elite-masters-degrees-that-dont-pay-off-11625752773 …

Reading this article just made me sad. By the time they even get into the classes in front of profs it’s too late. The school recruiters and brand sellers have done their work. Nobody suggested to them to do a cost benefit analysis. It’s very unfortunate.

It's entirely their fault. Use the big brain God gave you for something besides getting into Columbia.

Does Columbia truly have no responsibility? Seems similar to scammers preying on demented elders like me.

The problem with blaming Columbia here is that the people scammed are by definition off-scale-high on measures of intelligence, reading comprehension, math and so on. They have the cognitive tools to make a correct informed decision and choose not to use them

Reminds me of my friend who - blinded by love - paid for two daughters to attend a creative arts degree program. I think he's still paying down. The wonderful daughters, needless to say, do not work in the arts. People want to believe. Even people who should so much know better.

They are all great people, but they couldn't afford it. (My daughter's degree is also in a murky-income category, but in our case we can afford the spend.)

Yeah, it's hard to clip the wings on young creative people especially. They want to see how far their talent can take them and who can blame them for wanting to try?

A lot of older parents especially have the idea that any degree will be useful so will pay. I almost fell into this trap after high school. I was looking at art schools that would have cost 200k. Didn’t feel committed enough though so I went to a state school.
