Lots of professional degrees require crippling student debt, and people in that situation have all my sympathy. But a master's degree in film from Columbia? My burger better be here in 10 minutes or no tip for you.

Biden should cancel student debt for vocational degrees and double it for these people.

Reading this article just made me sad. By the time they even get into the classes in front of profs it’s too late. The school recruiters and brand sellers have done their work. Nobody suggested to them to do a cost benefit analysis. It’s very unfortunate.
-
It's entirely their fault. Use the big brain God gave you for something besides getting into Columbia.

lol I feel they know it’s stupid, but just see everyone else doing it, think that’s what they’re supposed to do, & just have a lingering feeling of ‘if this really was as stupid as it sounds, someone would definitely confirm that, right?’ or they’re trust fund kids who dgaf

There's definitely a strain of people who take being the teacher's pet all the way to PhD level. But I feel like they bought themselves a good education, just not the one they expected.

My undergrad professors told me not to go to graduate school unless someone paid me to. Is that uncommon?
-
I wonder if it depends on department? The chemistry professors were very clear that you should only pursue a higher degree if you wanted to go into industry. In my own major (Russian) there was zero expectation of higher degrees leading to employment

Eh, as someone without a degree, I think the messed up part is that bankruptcy doesn’t apply. I could take out a hundred thousand dollar loan for a bad idea of a business, too. The difference is that if it turned out badly, I could start over.
-
Part of that is that I would have to convince the bank I was likely to not declare bankruptcy; this probably solves the problem you describe, too.
