Not only are there more opportunities for ties/recounts, the odds of runoff stage, especially an early one, triggering a recount are actually higher since it's between the two candidates with the least number of votes where a wide margin is less likely statistically.

This doesn't happen with better voting methods, like approval voting and STAR. Ties/recounts are still possible, but only among potential winners, not the low-vote losers.
