The situation where voting stays open for weeks, and then it takes additional weeks to count the votes, puts electoral legitimacy at risk and we should do what we can to avoid it.

No. Elections have more legitimacy if people can vote when it's a good time for them, increasing participation.

It would still be easier for most people to vote by mail than at a polling place.

It would be even easier for them to vote online, or by proxy, but elections are full of trade-offs.
