The situation where voting stays open for weeks, and then it takes additional weeks to count the votes, puts electoral legitimacy at risk and we should do what we can to avoid it.

It would still be easier for most people to vote by mail than at a polling place.

Federal holidays don't help the people that have trouble accessing the polls though. It would probably incrementally increase turn out among likely voters.

Only employees of the federal government get federal holidays off. Most working-class people don't even get state holidays off.

Most people don't get federal holidays off. Taking Election Day off would probably become a fireable offense for all low-wage workers the minute we passed this law.

I can count on one hand the number of times I got a federal holiday off of work before going to college in my mid 30's. Only white collar workers get federal holidays off in the US. Blue collar/service industry have to work overtime on them to handle the holiday rush.
