Having a UK-like six week campaign followed by voting on a national holiday would be ideal. But we're headed instead in the direction of Presidential campaigns lasting three years, with voting being open for the final year of that.

No. Elections have more legitimacy if people can vote when it's a good time for them, increasing participation.

Because if you are collecting votes for weeks, and counting them for weeks, it increases the length of time that an election outcome can be tampered with. For the purposes of legitimacy it doesn't even matter too much whether the threat is real.
