Who is the assumed “everyone involved” here? I think this may be a case where some of the Twitter Isn’t Real Life crowd are forgetting that Twitter Isn’t Real Life.

Out in the real world, who embraced the slogan/goal of defund the police? 1) a very diffuse array of young local activists, many stepping into public/political activism for 1st time, for whom it resonated w/their vision of what a better community would look like; 2) RW amplifiers

You had major institutional voices like the ACLU and Indivisible come out in support of defunding. Minneapolis went out and actually attempted it. That's not just a Democratic messaging infrastructure problem.

It's easy to believe ACLU & Indivisible elevated the number of Twitter users & Beltway savants who were engaging w/Defund. I'm much less sure that their support was the key independent variable driving what median voters heard.

NPR sure was all over it for a time. The bottom line is a lot of people in Dem world chose to talk about this and give it salience. Even the name was intentionally provocative. You can't blame everything on Fox.

Not trying to blame all on Fox. Arguing for an infrastructural diagnosis/response that includes both structures to bring a wider (geographically, demographically) array of people into Dem-side activism, & better structures (media, social media, f2f) to connect outward to voters

I share your enthusiasm for the second part (Frankensteining together some working infrastructure for reaching voters), but I don't think any amount of it helps if party elites and activists choose to talk about unpopular stuff rather than put their strongest issues forward

My suggestion though is that changing the range of voices that count as, or are heard by, "party elites & activists" is *also* better approached as an infrastructure issue, rather than as a "listen to better pundits" or "run more focus groups" issue. Hence my first part above?

I guess I'm back on the rocks of still not understanding your concept of infrastructure, especially in this upstream direction. I'll keep trying to get my head around it.

See eg this great description of what made India Walton an effective campaigner👇 Captures how important unions can be in shaping pipeline of potential politicians with deep understanding of non-progressive non-activists. That's supply side infrastructure https://newrepublic.com/article/162788/india-walton-buffalo-socialist-mayor …pic.twitter.com/KUrj4bVFyf

With the deepest respect to Walton, her example is from the "win an upset in a Democratic primary" track rather than what I think you and I are most interested in.

But eg a Dem-side w/more routes for folks w/roots in labor organizing to rise to positions of leadership (so, often these days: nurses everywhere) is a Dem-side in which leaders in cities+suburbs+rural areas have experiences+ties that better enable them to hear each other's needs
