I love that the vertical moon dildo is still the official landing plan. This configuration was rejected in the sixties because the moon is lumpy and standing a pencil on its end is not the stablest way to land, but now we have computers and Elon says it's okay.https://twitter.com/SpaceNews_Inc/status/1407805923599454208 …

It would appear they think it's still remarkably hard to make a rocket stand for its relaunch back home when all you have to work with is sharp-as-fuck dust and the couple meatbags you brought from Earth

People really don't know how sharp that dust is

It's also sticky as hell and sometimes it floats in unexpected ways. No atmosphere means that photons are more likely to positively charge dust on the light side of the moon, while the solar wind does the opposite on the dark side. Dust goes up over 100 miles where they meet.

I'm glad I'm safely here on regular-dust-covered earth so I can enjoy how cool that all is instead of worrying about taking my spacesuit off wrong and getting moonlung

This would not be necessary if we spent a couple years's budget bombarding the moon with automated foundries that would turn some of that horrible horrible stuff into manageable bricks Same goes for Mars, tons of self-managed infrastructure should be in place before a guy is sent

lol we can't even make a maintenance-free automated brick factory here on earth, where we don't have to worry about ionized knifedust

Maintenance can wait tho, my proposal is we absolutely bomb the place with them and when people eventually land they can try to idk melt the stuff for roofing material or something

What if we just dropped these magic in-situ factories in our backyard to solve all our economic problems

nah. I'd rather not get factory-bombed -in retrospect, any kind of bombing would be frowned upon over here- any time soon if that's possible.

          Replying to @otrahuevada @Pinboard and

it's just kind of a faux-pas over here you know, your neighbors just don't like you as much when you bomb them, even if that stuff is container-sized machinery (...bummer) on their homes.
